Assessment Strategies: Test Banks & Practice Tests, Quiz Press

Introduction

A useful tool to help students study for exams is to provide students with banks of practice assessment questions. These collections of questions can be invaluable to students in their preparation for exams in that the practice questions allow students to gauge their knowledge of course material prior to the examination itself. This self-assessment capability through the use of the practice test questions enhances the use of course study guides. Course study guides provide information on the material to be covered, but not on the types or wording of questions that will be included in an exam. While information on question wording is helpful for all students, it is be particularly informative for students with learning disabilities, specifically students with reading issues.

Instructions on How to Use Test Banks

There are many ways to create banks of assessment questions. Exams from previous versions of a course can be provided to students. Instructors can give students weekly quizzes that allow students to practice questions that will be on exams. In this case, students will also receive feedback from the instructor that can guide their preparation for major assessments. Sample test questions may also be provided by the publisher of the textbooks used in the course. Questions can also be created. There are software programs that make the process of creating test questions relatively easy, for example, Quiz Press. This software makes the creation of these types of study materials relatively simple. Quiz Press allows you to create examples of assessment questions that can be uploaded online to a course web site or printed and used by students as practice assessments.

Every e-Tool in the e-Toolbox was reviewed by either a UDI Online Project research and design team member, or one or several faculty at five partner institutions who incorporated a specific e-Tool into an online or blended course they taught. Faculty from these partner institutions also requested that students review the e-Tool included in a course or products created through the use of the e-Tool (e.g., documents, videos, audio clips, or other items). Likert scale surveys with open-ended questions were used by respondents.  Feedback from the reviewing UDI Online team member or faculty who used a tool is presented in addition to student ratings when available.
